Why Lycia of All Places

Why Lycia of all places?

Well, I can think of so much that I don’t quite know where to start. The Lycian coastline ranges from Fethiye to Antalya. She and the corresponding hinterland have well earned the name “Land of Light” with their approx. 320 sunny days.

The fauna is varied and lush here. Oleander bushes, begonias and jasmine, like many other blooming plants, create colorful diversity on as many days. In the coastal region you will find olives, citrus, figs and other fruit trees as well as various palm trees. The Aleppo pine is typical of this coastal region and completes the picture. Along the coast you will find endless little turquoise bays, steep passages and beautiful beaches.
Mass tourism is on the entire route of approx. 500 km almost impossible to find. Ancient sites everywhere, however. In the hinterland you meet an imposing mountain world.

There’s so much to explore that you usually come back. The towns called Kalkan, Patara and Kas. I advertise are quite right in the middle of this coastal section of Turkey. Dalaman and Antalya airports are far away, which helps to make time just slow down. Kalkan is an old fish village with a small harbor and an angled, steeply rising old town with wonderful restaurants, most of which have roof terraces. One has breathtaking views of the bay. There’s everything you want in a small, quiet tourist resort. Infrastructure is well expanded. Lots of well-assorted supermarkets, beautiful shops for shopping, restaurants from budget to fine dining. You will find plenty of bars, clubs and above all very nice beach clubs. And last but not least wonderful wellness offers with hammam, sauna and massage. Apart from some fishing boats, there are also many excursion boats in the harbor to discover the fantastic coastal region with very good water quality and its many small islands and grottos. Of course, water sports are part of it.

In recent years, many villas have been built in Kalkan and offer a very comfortable holiday. In addition, there are small, tasteful guesthouses and hotels. Kas is the county city of the region. It’s getting a little more fluid here. Also here is a beautiful old town with many restaurants, bars and small but fine shops. The character of the place is very characterized by alternative tourism. Kas is a hotspot for outdoor sports. Whether paragliding, water sports or hiking, here almost everything goes. Especially divers can get their money’s worth here. Right outside Kas there are great dive sites (wreck diving) in the marine national park. The sea region is awarded blue flag Offshore countless islands and the small Greek island of Meis are just a stone’s throw away. Also here lie like in Kalkan, many ships in the harbor that invite you to a tour into the blue. In addition, Kas also has a separate marina.

Patara is the name of the ancient site with its 12 km long dune sand beach. Here’s the Caretta Caretta at home. Whether adventurer, nature lover or history lover, everyone is right here! The corresponding place is named Gelemis. This is adjacent (2 km) to the dispatched former harbor basin. It’s very leisurely going on in the village of Gelemis. The character is village. This is where the time almost stopped. You can find many traditional restaurants with delicious food. There are two cocktail bars, a jazz bar, a beautiful garden cafe with homemade cake, a good cup of coffee and small gallery, as well as a handful of souvenir shops and a very nice boutique. Here you can ride, hike, explore history, participate in canoe tours, swim and enjoy the wonderful beach. All in one, just incredibly good “switch off!” A direct entry into the course of the Lycian hiking trail (approx. 500 km total), is possible here.

Well, hopefully you got an impression of this region. Even if it is certainly not part of the bargain price holiday destinations, it is also something very special. It’s worth it! This region is a great destination almost all year round. In the high season, even here what’s going on and swimming holidays, with everything possible on and in the water, is a “hit”. In the pre and postseason you can usually still go well into the water, but also fantastic hiking. Now it’s much quieter and it’s definitely a pleasure to start discovery tours and excursions even because of the milder temperatures.

I will tell you what variety of these are available soon. Spring starts mid February. The meadows turn juicy green and from now on the wildflowers alternate until May. Summer is hot and dry. The sea is warm. In autumn, which is also called second spring it only takes a little rain to create late bloomers and new green. In addition, the light now looks particularly warm and the visibility is often very clear. Winter is short, barely longer than 6 weeks and will take place sometime between January and March. Even at this time of year you enjoy much more light here than in Germany for example. Even if it rains again and again, sometimes severely with imposing thunderstorms, but then the sun usually shows up again.

I can therefore recommend a holiday in one of our villas, from mid-March to end of December. All the way to Gusto. You can ask for the possibility of long-term rentals, e.g. for wintering, if you are interested. Some of our properties are equipped with hammam, sauna or heated pool.
Out of season (May to October) most hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, bars etc Closed. It’s absolutely advantageous to have your own kitchen and an appealing setting available for the relaxing hours.
If you don’t want to go on a pure villas holiday, I can warmly advise a combination like: Hiking the Lycian Way & Villa, Yoga week & Villa,, Sailing Tour & Villa, Roundtrip & Villa.
